For those of you who don’t know her, Ladyhawke is an electro-pop musician with some heavy 80’s influences. With her debut album set to come out in a few months DIY figured it was about time we caught up with her to discuss tours, recording, and reminisce about old school games consoles.
You are originally from New Zealand, but have since relocated to the UK. Did you move to London specifically for your music career?
Yeah. I spent the last two years in Sydney, Australia. I pretty much only moved here just to do Ladyhawke.
Your real name is Pip Brown but you use Ladyhawke in conjunction with your music. Is there a reason you decided to separate the two? Does Ladyhawke have a different persona from Pip?
Yeah, I guess as myself I am really a shy, kind of quiet person. I thought in order to do a solo project I needed to be a bit more than just a wallflower so I created Ladyhawke as an alter ego for myself. It kind of gives me an excuse to do things I wouldn’t normally do as Pip.
A lot of your music is influenced by artists from the 80’s. If you could bring back anything from the 80’s to 2008 what would it be?
Um, that’s a good question. I guess maybe game consoles and shoes. I can’t think what else. Maybe 80’s hair.
You are about to release your first single ‘Paris Is Burning’ at the end of this month, can we expect an album any time soon?
Yep. The album is released September fifteenth.
You play over ten instruments. How many instruments did you end up playing on the album?
I love how that number keeps growing! I play drums, guitar, bass, and synth. I’ve been doing music since I was a kid so I can do most things, but well I can only play about four or five. On the album I play drums on one track and I play bass on most tracks, guitar on all the tracks, and synth on some, so it’s a real mixed bag.
Did you record your album here in London?
Yeah, everything was recorded hear in London, except ‘Back of the Van’ which was recorded back in Sydney.
A lot of bands like to venture off to exotic places to record their albums. Is there anywhere you would like to go for your next album?
Ah, good question! If I could go anywhere I reckon I would probably go back home. Just to be around my friends and stuff. It’s just that there are some amazing producers out here and some amazing musicians to collaborate with and you know, New Zealand is about twenty four hours away on a plane. If I could bring a crew of people with me I would go back to New Zealand to record.
Recently you’ve toured with Soulwax and We Are Scientists, and it’s said that Peaches is a fan of your music. Is there anyone you have run across that you would like to collaborate with in the future?
I would really like to collaborate with Lightspeed Champion. He’s really cool and we like lots of the same stuff so I think we could do something really cool. I’d like to do something with Peaches as well I think that would be awesome.
You are about to set out on a big European tour, what are you most looking forward to about it?
I’m really looking forward to Melt in Berlin, it’s a festival and I think it should be really cool. Also, Paris. I think playing Paris will be amazing because I haven’t been back for a long time. I’ve never done a big European tour so I’m looking forward to it.
